Music and the fight for copyright

Standard

Freedom of speech, music history and the copyright jungle… a nice article by Cory Doctorow about why the fight to manage copyright – music and other arts – is still a live issue, despite recent victories such as the rejection of ACTA by the EU parliament.  It’s a long piece, but anyone who cares about, or is interested in, the battle between music and business should give it a read.

Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist, journalist and blogger — the co-editor of Boing Boing and the author of Tor Teen/HarperCollins UK novels like FOR THE WIN and the bestselling LITTLE BROTHER. He is the former European director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, he now lives in London.

The spoons – such an underrated instrument

Standard

This is Debs “Spoons” Perry – a righteous, rocking older woman from Western Australia. She’s been playing the spoons since 1972 when she was “taught to play the spoons by an elderly man, Danny in The Stoned Crow Wine bar in North Fremantle”.  Her choices of cover versions are eclectic and surprising.

If you feel inspired – go to her website and get the DVD.

Madness – Genius

Standard

Lee “Scratch” Perry  – genius or madman… or both?  The man who has done more to define the reggae dub genre than any other artist/producer/shaman.  Lots of stuff on YouTube – I’d particularly recommend “I’m a Psychiatrist” and “Cloak & Dagger” .

Here is Mr Perry in a (relatively) recent interview after a gig in Riga.  Check out the outfit!

Pere Ubu – Breathe

Standard

Pere Ubu – a band that never got the exposure or the breaks that they deserved.  Easily as good and insightful as Talking Heads or REM and as idiosyncratic as Radiohead or Arcade Fire.  This particular track always reminds me of Brighton for some reason and this video has that “on the pier” look and feel.  Oh… and the singer, David Thomas, lives in Hove!

Sound level is quiet, so turn it up!
