Music and the fight for copyright
Freedom of speech, music history and the copyright jungle… a nice article by Cory Doctorow about why the fight to manage copyright – music and other arts – is still a live issue, despite recent victories such as the rejection of ACTA by the EU parliament. It’s a long piece, but anyone who cares about, or is interested in, the battle between music and business should give it a read.
Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist, journalist and blogger — the co-editor of Boing Boing and the author of Tor Teen/HarperCollins UK novels like FOR THE WIN and the bestselling LITTLE BROTHER. He is the former European director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, he now lives in London.

Creative Typography
Here at Dub Central, we like a nice pair of brackets as much as the next fontophile and here are some excellent examples from advertising campaigns. Our favourite is this risque Durex ad. There are plenty more at Tripwire.
Light painting with iPads
Tho’ not great fans of all things Apple, we at the BrightonDub Control Centre do acknowledge that the iPad is an impressive toy/gadget. This video shows an amazing stop-animation approach to create text and images that seem to float in the air.
The spoons – such an underrated instrument
This is Debs “Spoons” Perry – a righteous, rocking older woman from Western Australia. She’s been playing the spoons since 1972 when she was “taught to play the spoons by an elderly man, Danny in The Stoned Crow Wine bar in North Fremantle”. Her choices of cover versions are eclectic and surprising.

An early Kindle?
This early 20th century sketch showcases the future of books. The sketch is from the April 1935 issue of Everyday Science and Mechanics [via Boing Boing].

Madness – Genius
Lee “Scratch” Perry – genius or madman… or both? The man who has done more to define the reggae dub genre than any other artist/producer/shaman. Lots of stuff on YouTube – I’d particularly recommend “I’m a Psychiatrist” and “Cloak & Dagger” .
Here is Mr Perry in a (relatively) recent interview after a gig in Riga. Check out the outfit!
Pere Ubu – Breathe
Pere Ubu – a band that never got the exposure or the breaks that they deserved. Easily as good and insightful as Talking Heads or REM and as idiosyncratic as Radiohead or Arcade Fire. This particular track always reminds me of Brighton for some reason and this video has that “on the pier” look and feel. Oh… and the singer, David Thomas, lives in Hove!
Sound level is quiet, so turn it up!
Beach Boys at the Pavilion
Amazing video of the Beach Boys playing on the roof of the Royal Pavilion. Brighton’s own “Abbey Road” moment. The band look well wrapped up – the joys of an English summer! Apparently the footage has only just been discovered – a night security guard found it.
Great gig guide for Brighton
There is an excellent website for gigs and music and stuff in Brighton. Called Brighton Noise, they proclaim “Every day we trawl the internet looking for Brighton gig listings so you don’t have to”. A boon for the live music buff!
